Keep your rice safe!

16 September, 2022

Rice is considered to be the most widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world especially in India. It is the most important grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake, providing more than one-fifth of the calories consumed worldwide by humans. Rice complements almost all the cuisines and this is exactly why it is so largely consumed in our country.

There are different types of rice available in the market and each one has a different shelf life. However, the distinctive difference can be observed when it comes to the shelf life of raw white and brown rice. Still, both the kinds of rice are considered safe to be stored if kept dry and stored in a controlled temperature. Refrigerating and freezing the raw rice increases their shelf lives. Raw rice should ideally be stored in air tight containers and in cool, dry places. But many a times it is found that stored rice attract bugs which destroys the rice and take a toll on its shelf life.

In order to keep the stored rice bugs free;

Use Bay/Neem leaves inside the storage containers to get rid of bugs.

One can even use Cloves to fight the bugs, simply put it in the container and avoid infestation of the bugs in your stored rice.

Rice can also be stored in a freezer if infected with bugs and be cleaned later to make a pile of rice bugs free.

If nothing else works, keep the stored rice under sunlight for sometimes and let the bugs crawl away. It is the most convenient way of keeping your stored rice safe if it’s already infested with bugs.

Store your rice appropriately and enjoy having it in your daily meals!
